Choosing your first camera: phone versus dedicated gear

Modern phone cameras are genuinely capable, and for most new creators the phone already sitting in their pocket is the right camera to start with. Buying dedicated equipment before understanding your own workflow often means buying gear for habits you have not actually developed yet, especially in the early stages of a creator's journey.
What limits early video quality is usually lighting and audio, not the camera body itself. Spending early budget on a simple light or a clip on microphone improves footage far more noticeably than a pricier camera ever would at this stage, even when it feels like a minor detail at the time.
Once your format and needs are genuinely clear, dedicated gear becomes a sensible, informed upgrade rather than a guess made too early. At that point you already know exactly which limitation is worth paying to solve, particularly once an audience starts to grow, which becomes obvious only in hindsight.
