Why engagement matters more than follower count early on

A modest audience that consistently comments and returns is a stronger foundation than a large one that scrolls past silently, since engagement signals a genuine connection that raw numbers alone cannot show, a small shift that adds up over a long career, which is truer the longer you keep at it.

Early on, it helps to measure success through conversation rather than count, since a handful of thoughtful replies often indicates real progress more reliably than a passing spike in views ever could, particularly when the workload starts to pile up, even when the temptation to skip it is strong, even for creators with years of experience.

Follower counts matter more for certain opportunities later, but genuine engagement built first tends to produce far healthier, more durable growth than chasing numbers before any real relationship exists, a lesson that usually arrives through direct experience, which rarely feels urgent until it suddenly does, especially for anyone building an audience from nothing.
