Setting your rates as a new creator

Pricing your own work is one of the more uncomfortable early tasks a creator faces, partly because there is no single universal formula that applies to everyone equally, since rates depend on audience size, engagement, niche and the specific scope of work requested, all of which take real time to calibrate.

Start by researching general ranges within your niche rather than guessing blindly from nowhere, because even rough benchmarks give a useful starting point, which you can then adjust based on your own audience quality and the particular demands of a given brief in front of you.

Underpricing early to win a first deal is genuinely common among new creators, but it should be treated as a deliberate, temporary choice rather than a permanent baseline going forward, so revisit your rates regularly as your audience and your confidence both steadily grow, which tends to matter more than it first seems.

Practice stating your rate aloud before an actual negotiation ever happens, since hearing yourself say the number confidently in private makes it considerably easier to hold that same number steady once a real conversation with a brand is genuinely under way, especially once the work starts to feel routine.
